Major in Art

In order to qualify for a diploma from the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA) with a major in art, each student must meet the following academy guidelines.

A. Complete no less than 75 credits of classroom or supervised activities in Grades 9-12 with passing grades (B or better). Satisfactory attendance with good citizenship are reflected in academic grades and credits completed.

*All Academy courses taken outside of the school day are not to be counted for graduation from Culver City High School. All Academy courses taken after school will be listed on the Academy transcript and will not be valid for the CCHS transcript.

B. Complete the following subject matter requirements in Grades 9-12 with passing grades:

1. DRAWING AND PAINTING/CERAMICS (35 CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
 

Drawing and Painting (10 credits)
Studio Art (10 credits)
Advanced Placement Studio Art (10 credits)
Art Production (10 credits)
Art Design (5 credits)
Art Theory (5 credits)
Ceramics 1A (10 credits)
Advanced Ceramics (10 credits)

Santa Monica College Dual Enrollment:
Art 30A Watercolor (5 credits)
 Art 10A Design (5 credits)
Art 20A Drawing (5 credits)

Beginning Drawing:
 Ryman Arts at USC (5 credits)

Advanced Drawing:
 Ryman Artsat USC (5 credits)

Advanced Painting:
 Ryman at USC (5 credits)

Watercolor:
Ryman Arts at USC (5 credits)
Saturday High at Pasadena Art Center (5 credits)
Young Artist Studio Program OTIS College of Art and Design (5 credits)
Laguna College of Art and Design Portfolio Development (5 credits)
The Ragan Academy (5 credits per class) Brentwook Art Center (5 credits per class)

Regional Occupational Program: 
Beg. Animation (5 credits)

Regional Occupational Program: 
Advanced Animation (5 credits)

Students must choose from the list above to complete the course requirements for graduation from the Academy with a major in art. Students should check all course pre-requisites and check with the instructor before signing up. Any other courses not listed must received prior approval by the instructor for credit.

   
2. ART PRODUCTION (40 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
Art Production I-XII Semester credits are based on hours logged
 

All art production I-XII credits are earned as students log hours on Academy productions. Credits will be given as follows:

5 credits = 90 hours
4 credits = 72 hours
3 credits = 54 hours
2 credits = 36 hours
1 credit = 18 hours

Art students may earn credits by creating artworks for art exhibits at various galleries/museums/venues including: MOCA, LACMA, UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, UCLA Hammer Museum, The Santa Monica Museum of Art, Java Drama, local coffee houses, etc.

Students may also earn credit by working on scenic design/painting for productions in the theatre and film departments.

   
3. DIRECTED STUDIES AND INTERNSHIPS
 

Students working on any pre-approved art production/internship outside of the Academy will receive additional credits on their Academy transcript. The amount of credit will depend on the number of hours logged.

        The Museum of Contemporary Art Apprenticeship Program
        The Los Angeles County Museum of Art Internship Program

5 credits = 90 hours
4 credits = 72 hours
3 credits = 54 hours
2 credits = 36 hours
1 credit = 18 hours

   
4. SUMMER ART INTENSIVE
 

Students participating in any accredited summer arts program will receive 10 additional credits of Directed Studies on their Academy transcript. Programs include:


California State Summer School for the Arts at CalArts The Launchpad Middle College Program at Santa Monica College Summer of Art at OTIS College

Students participating in any accredited summer art class(es) will receive 5 additional credits of Directed Studies.  Programs include:

Saturday High at Pasadena Art Center
Portfolio Preparation at OTIS College of Art and Design Laguna College of Art and Design Portfolio Development The Ryman Program at USC UCLA Extension

   
5. ART ABROAD PROGRAM
  Students participating in any art program abroad will receive 10 additional credits on their Academy transcript.

Minor in Art
