Major in Film and Video

In order to qualify for a diploma from the Culver City Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA), each student must meet the following district requirements:

A. Complete no less than 62 credits of classroom or supervised activities in grades 9-12 with passing grades (B or better). Satisfactory attendance and good citizenship are reflected in academic grades and credits completed.

*All Academy courses are not to be counted for graduation from Culver City High School. All Academy courses will be listed on the Academy transcript and will not be valid for the CCHS transcript

B. Complete the following subject matter requirements in grades 9-12 with passing grades:

1. DIGITAL VIDEO PRODUCTION (15 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Digital Video Production I (5 semester credits)
  Digital Video Production II (5 semester credits)
  Digital Video Production III (5 semester credits)
   
2. 16MM FILMMAKING (15 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  16mm Filmmaking I (5 semester credits)
  16mm Filmmaking II (5 semester credits)
  16mm Filmmaking III (5 semester credits)
   
3. CRITICAL STUDIES (10 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  World Cinema (5 semester credits)
  American Cinema 1900-1950 (5 semester credits)
  American Cinema 1950-2000 (5 semester credits)
  Director’s Vision (5 semester credits)
  Masterpieces in American Cinema (5 semester credits)
   
Students must complete two of the above classes of their choice to complete the
Critical Studies requirement.
   
4. WRITING (10 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Screenwriting I (5 semester credits)
  Screenwriting II (5 semester credits)
   
5. 16MM FILMMAKING SEMINARS (6 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Beginning Cinematography Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Advanced Cinematography Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Director of Photographer’s Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Director’s Craft Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Assistant Director’s Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Beginning Editor’s Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Advanced Editor’s Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Production Sound Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Post Production Sound Seminar (1 semester credit)
  16mm Camera Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Filmmakers Reel Seminar (1 semester credit)
   
6. CRITICAL STUDIES SEMINARS (6 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Film Noir Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Science Fiction Seminar (1 semester credit)
  The Godfather Seminar (1 semester credit)
  The Frank Capra Seminar (1 semester credit)
  The John Ford Seminar (1 semester credit)
  The Comedy Genre (1 semester credit)
  The Hitchcock Seminar (1 semester credit)
  Screenwriting Seminar (1 semester credit)
   
Students must complete five of the above seminars of their choice to complete the 16mm Filmmaking Seminar requirement
   
7. DIRECTED STUDIES IN FILMMAKING (12 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)


Students can earn 2 semester credits in directed studies by working on the annual Frost Film Festival and/or the production of Java Drama.

Students working on any pre-approved film outside of the Academy (for example a USC or UCLA shoot) will receive additional credits in directed studies on their
Academy transcript. The amount of credit will depend on the number of hours logged. 90 hours = 5 credits, 72 hours = 4 credits, 54 hours = 3 credits, 36 hours = 2 credits, 18 hours = 1 credit.

   
8. SUMMER FILM INTENSIVE
  Students participating in any accredited summer film program in the states (Cal Arts, Northwestern, USC, NYU, etc.) will receive 10 additional credits of directed studies on their Academy transcript.
   
9. FILMMAKING ABROAD PROGRAM
  Students participating in the Young Filmmakers Abroad Summer Program will receive 10 additional credits on their Academy transcript.

Minor in Film and Video
