Major in Theatre With A Performance Emphasis

In order to qualify for a diploma from the Academy of Visual & Performing Arts (AVPA) with a THEATRE MAJOR, each student must meet the following academy guidelines:

A. Complete no less than 84 credits of classroom or supervised activities in grades 9-12 with passing grades (B or better). Satisfactory attendance with good citizenship are reflected in academic grades and credits completed.

*All Academy courses are not to be counted for graduation from Culver City High School. All Academy courses will be listed on the Academy transcript and will not be valid for the CCHS transcript

B. Complete the following subject matter requirements in grades 9-12 with passing grades:

1. ACTING (10 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Intermediate Acting (5 semester credits)
  Scene Study (5 semester credits)
  Character Analysis (5 semester credits)
  Actor’s Workshop (5 semester credits)
   
Students must complete 2 of the above courses to complete the Acting requirement for graduation.
   
2. VOICE (5 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Voice & Articulation (5 semester credits)
   
3. MOVEMENT (5 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Movement for the Actor (5 semester credits)
   
4. WRITING (5 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Playwrighting (5 semester credits)
   
5. THEATRE HISTORY (5 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  History of World Theatre (5 semester credits)
   
6. ACTING SEMINARS (4 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Auditioning Techniques (1 semester credit)
  Improvisation (1 semester credit)
  Acting for the Camera (1 semester credit)
  Classical Acting (1 semester credit)
  Creative Dramatics (1 semester credit)
  Directing Seminar (2 semester credit)
   
Students must complete 2 of the above courses of their choice to complete the Acting
requirement for graduation
   
7. TECHNICAL/ DESIGN SEMINARS (2 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Lighting Techniques (1 semester credit)
  Sound Design (1 semester credit)
  Scenic Methods (1 semester credit)
  Masks and Make-up (1 semester credit)
  Puppetry (1 semester credit)
  Costumes (1 semester credit)
  Stage Management (1 semester credit)
   
Students must complete 2 of the above courses of their choice to complete the
Technical/Design requirement for graduation
   
8. MOVEMENT SEMINARS (1 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Dance for the Actor (1 semester credit)
  Stage Combat (1 semester credit)
   
9. VOCAL SEMINARS (1 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Musical Theatre (1 semester credit)
  Chamber Choir (1 semester credit)
   
10. ELECTIVE SEMINAR (1 SEMESTER CREDIT IN GRADES 9-12)
  Students can choose from any of the above seminars to fulfill this category.
   
11. THEATRE PRODUCTION/PERFORMANCE (45 SEMESTER CREDITS IN GRADES 9-12)
  Theatre Production I-XII (5 semester credits each)
  Theatre Performance I-XII (5 semester credits each)
   

All theatre production I-XII credits are earned as students work on Academy productions. In order to earn the five semester credits each production student must log 90 hours of work in one of the following areas: production management, scenic design, set construction, lighting design, sound design, costume design, props, publicity, house management, or running crew.

All theatre performance credits are earned as students act in Academy productions. In order to earn five semester credits acting students must log 90 hours of work in rehearsal
and performance.

The 45 semester credits in the above category can be earned by either working behind the scenes or on stage. If a student acts then they will receive performance credits and if a student is on crew then they will receive production credit.

   
12. DIRECTED STUDIES
 

Students working on any pre-approved theatre production outside of the Academy (for example: The Evidence Room, Mark Taper Forum, M.Y.E. Theatre Company, etc.) will receive additional credits on their Academy transcript. The amount of credit will depend on the number of hours logged. 90 hours = 5 credits, 72 hours = 4 credits, 54 hours = 3 credits, 36 hours = 2 credits, 18 hours = 1 credit.

Advanced students who direct a full-length production will receive 10 semester credits of Directed Studies on their Academy Transcripts.

   
13. SUMMER THEATRE INTENSIVE
  Students participating in any accredited summer theatre program in the states (Cal Arts, Northwestern, Santa Monica Playhouse, NYU, UCLA, etc.) will receive 10 additional credits of Directed Studies on their Academy transcript.
   
14. THEATRE ABROAD PROGRAM
  Students participating in any Theatre Abroad Summer Program will receive 10 additional credits on their Academy transcript.
