CCHS Artists Will Have Their Work Displayed
at World Financial Center in New York

April 9, 2003

CULVER CITY, Calif. -- Culver City High School seniors Amy R. and Soon J. will have their artwork exhibited at the World Financial Center in New York, The Lower Manhattan Development Company announced recently.

Their work was selected from hundreds of art pieces from across the country.

“My dream was to give comfort and love to all the people who have been left heartbroken from 9/11,” Uh said. “I am very happy my artwork can share my wish to them and people from all around the world.”

On the one-year anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, students in art teacher Kristine Hatanaka’s class created drawings of what they thought should be built where the World Trade Center (WTC) once stood.

“At that time, the development of the WTC site was in question, so I wanted to do something positive and productive,” Hatanaka said. “Basically, the students could create architectural buildings, parks, museums, sculpture, or a memorial. Then, each student had to write about their artwork and elaborate on their ideas.”

The artwork by Russell and Uh will be exhibited at the Winter Garden in the World Financial Center in New York from now through the end of May as part of a larger exhibition that has been described as a timeline exhibit and will include the actual designs by the architect, Daniel Libeskind, who has been selected to rebuild the WTC site. “I am honored to be a part of such a project and hope that it will have an impact on everyone who sees it,” Russell said. “I wish I could go to New York to see the exhibit!”

The Lower Manhattan Development Company is responsible for the redevelopment of the area where the World Trade Center’s twin towers once stood. For more information, visit the company’s website at www.renewnyc.com.

"FROM RECOVERY TO RENEWAL" OPENS AT THE WINTER GARDEN
Exhibit Displays Chronology of Planning Process for the World Trade Center Site and New Images of the Selected Design by Studio Daniel Libeskind

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation today announced the opening of a new exhibit at the World Financial Center Winter Garden, “From Recovery to Renewal: the Public Process of Rebuilding the World Trade Center Site and Creating a Permanent Memorial”. The exhibit is the third in a series of exhibitions designed by the LMDC to educate and involve the public in the planning process for the World Trade Center site. The initial exhibit, “Plans in Progress” displayed the nine proposals released in December 2002 and attracted more than 100,000 visitors. The new exhibit tracks the planning process for the site and features new renditions of the selected design: Memory Foundations by Studio Daniel Libeskind.

LMDC Chairman John C. Whitehead said, “This new exhibit encourages the public’s continued involvement and celebrates the contributions of all the many constituencies who have been invaluable in guiding the complex rebuilding planning process.”

LMDC Interim President Kevin Rampe said, “The exhibit tracks the rebuilding efforts at the site from the tragedy to the recent selection of Studio Daniel Libeskind’s design. It vividly demonstrates the extent public input informed the creation of the design and its selection, while reminding us how far we’ve come and the work that lies ahead.”

The new exhibit spans 198 linear feet and is divided topically along the north and south ground floor walls of the Winter Garden’s atrium. The south wall of the exhibit includes historic elements such as a recovered fragment of the 1993 memorial, pieces of World Trade Center steel, actual handwritten comment cards, and unsolicited proposals. It also incorporates four video screens that run continuous footage of press conferences and other events, and ten electronic LED screens continually flashing actual public comment. The north wall explores Studio Daniel Libeskind’s Memory Foundations design for the World Trade Center site through six illustrated panels that include updated renderings of the design concept and a revised version of Libeskind’s original 1:40 scale model.

From Recovery to Renewal will be on display from April 7, 2003 through May 31, 2003 at the World Financial Center Winter Garden, adjacent to the World Trade Center site. The exhibit will be open to the public daily, including holidays, from 7 am to 11pm.
