Synopsis :

One imagines a white room with a shuttered window, a pattern of sun on the floor, dust motes in the narrow sunlight. Something is about to happen here. There has been a funeral. The father is dead and Bernarda Alba is determined to confine her daughters in this living tomb of a house. But the daughters are flesh and blood.

Cheolseung Kim (Director)

Born in Seoul, Korea in 1971, Cheolseung went on to graduate from Yonsei University at Seoul in the department of Philosophy in 1998. Since coming to America in August, 1999, he finished his MFA in Directing at UCLA Department of Theater. Past directing credits include If Flower, An Acquainted Man’s Visit, Byol-Ly, Equus, Waiting for Godot, The Lesson, and The Hunger Artist Departs. He has been acting, designing, and writing but still he is a theatre director and will always be..[top]

Irene (Stage Manager)

Irene is currently a senior at Culver City High School and this is her third year in AVPA. She ha done performance and technical work on thirteen Blurred Vision productions including Cabaret, Waiting for Godot, The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, and Java Drama 8. Irene would like to thank Michael, Kwang-Sub, and Cheolseung for bringing their experience and talent to this production. She would also like to thank her support group (you know who you are) for keeping her head up high in moments of weakness. Working on The House of Bernarda Alba has been a new and inspirational experience for the entire cast and crew. May we never forget what we have learned. Good job guys! [top]

Kwang-Sub (Lighting Designer)

Was born and raised in Korea. He is studying lighting design at UCLA School of Theatre, Film, and Television. He has Designed Don Quixote, Funeral Ceremony; I, Again, Prosperity and Downfall of the City of Mahagony in Korea. In the United States, designs include Parachute Kid, The Glass Menagerie, La Victima, and Dementia. [Top]

Heather (Lighting Designer)

Heather is a senior and has been with AVPA for a year and a half. She has previously been apprentice to the costume designer for Oliver! and was a co-lighting designer for Java Drama 8."Her most recent contribution to the Blurred Vision Theatre Company was stage manager for Twelfth Night. She would like to thank all of her friends and family for their support. She would like to give an extra special thank you to Irene and Robin because they "rule the world." [Top]

Michael (Sound Designer)

Michael is a sound designer and composer who has been working in the L.A. area independent theatre/dance scene for the past ten years. As the primary composer for the Bitch Co. dance company, he has composed the original works for all of the LA premiers including Falling, Sloppy White Face, and Bag of Burdens. He was the sound designer and primary composer for the acclaimed production of Hamletmachine at UCLA, where he studied music composition. He has also provided his sound design work to The Bastard Company productions of Fake and Bro K. en Amerika, and continues to work with various area artists, as well as his band,
Franky & the Kosmo Nots. [Top]

Kahlil (Sound Designer)

Will Pellegrini (Set Designer)

Will Pellegrini graduated in June 1999 from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, with a degree in Theater. He is an experienced actor, designer and director. His directing credits include productions of Once On This Island, Hair, West Side Story, City of Angeles, and Into the Woods. Will joined the AVPA theater staff in the spring of 1999 and provided the set for Little Shop of Horrors. He has since then designed and built sets for the AVPA productions of The Crucible, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Taming of the Shrew, The Diary of Anne Frank, Twelfth Night, and Noises Off. He also directed Oliver! last spring, Cabaret, The Philadelphia at Java Drama, and will be directing the upcoming production of The Who's Tommy. Will currently teaches an introductory course in Scenic Design, as well as the Audition Workshop. [Top]

Resa (Set Designer)

Resa, in her final year as an art major, has been involved with Blurred Vision for the past four years in the area of scenic painting. Her highlights with the art program include the Ryman Program for Young Artists (second year), LACMA High School Internship Program (second year), and MOCA's Inside Out Art Exhibit (2001). Theatre credits include The Crucible, Brighton Beach Memoirs (sound design), The Taming of the Shrew, Cabaret (props), Java Drama 8 and 9, Waiting for Godot, and Twelfth Night. [Top]

Darryl B. Hovis (Producer)

Mr. Darryl Hovis received his BA in history from Cal State Long Beach. His training in theatre comes from South Coast Repertory, La Jolla Playhouse, and UCSD. He is the Artistic Director and the Theatre Chair for the Academy. He teaches acting, theatre history, stagecraft, and is in charge of the Academy's Blurred Vision Theatre Company. His directing credits include "The Miracle Worker", "Into the Woods", "Crimes of the Heart", "The Wiz", "The Diviners", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "A History of the American Film", "The Crucible", and "Little Shop of Horrors". Cari Ann Henderson (Choreographer)

Cari Ann, an alumni of UCLA's World Arts and Cultures Department is happy to work on her third production with AVPA. She's worked professionally as a choreographer and performing artist in Los Angeles for the past ten years. Cari Ann would like to thank the all-female cast for pushing past the unseen and breaking down invisible walls of spirit and duende. Bravo! What passion lies beneath your skin! Simone is Freshman, and Alba marks her first production with the Blurred Vision Theatre Company. She has performed with the Los Angeles Women’s Shakespeare Company and has been studying dance for eleven years. Working on The House of Bernarda Alba has been the most amazing experience for Becca, and is so honored to be a part of this incredible ensemble of girls. Melanie (Chorus)

Melanie is very excited about being a part of Bernarda Alba. She is currently a sophomore, Alba being the second production this season with Blurred Vision. Before AVPA, Melanie was involved in several plays with the Middle School, Santa Monica Playhouse and The Feeling Zone. This cast has been a privelege to work with considering that it is an all-female cast. She looks forward to many more experiences here and wishes everyone to break a leg. [Top]

Tess (Magalena)

The House of Bernarda Alba marks Tess’ second production of the season. She was previously seen in Twelfth Night (Maria), Oliver! (Charlotte), and Java Drama 8. She is so thankful and excited to be a part of this wonderful, unique play and feels it was great to have this kind of new experience and share it with her friends. She would first like to thank Cheolseung for giving the entire cast a chance to do something unlike anything they have done before. A big thank you goes out to all of the people who helped with lights, sound, set, and costumes. Tess would also like to thank the cast for being so talented, loving and supportive of each other and actually becoming a family,"I love you all!" Elisa (Maria Josefa)

This is Elisa’s third year in AVPA, and she is still loving it. Kimiko (Adela)

This is Kimiko’s first year in AVPA. She has been performing all her life (acting, dancing, singing and crew), but this is her first production with Blurred Vision. Past productions include The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (Tilly), The Diary of Anne Frank ((Miep), Oliver! ((Mrs. Brownlow), and Twelfth Night (Sea Captain). Robin (Bernarda Alba)

The House of Bernarda Alba has been truly a unique and amazing experience; no other version of the play, and no other production in AVPA’s repertoire is comparable to it. Robin has enjoyed soaking up every moment of brilliance in the process. A thousand thank you’s to the cast and crew-the ultimate team who created and perfected the beauty of imperfection from such an ugly play. Tiffany (Angustius)

This is Tiffany’s second year and fourth production with Blurred Vision. She has performed in many shows outside of the Academy as well. Some past credits include Annie (Lily), Bugsy Malone (Tallulah), The Wizard of Oz (Glinda), Fiddler on the Roof (Tzeitle), Into the Woods (Witch), The Misanthrope (Celimene/Baque), as well as Oliver! (Ensemble). She is very excited and thankful to have had this opportunity to perform in The House of Bernarda Alba and would like to thank Cheolseung for being such an inspirational, and unique director to work with. She would also like to thank everyone in the cast and crew who contributed so much time and effort into this show. This has been a great learning experience for Tiffany and she will never forget it.
